Zoom Acquires Keybase, a File sharing and Secure Messaging Platform

Zoom

Zoom Video Communications has now acquired Keybase, a file-sharing, and a secure messaging platform.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed

Founded in 2014, Keybase offers end to end encrypted chat, file sharing, and code hosting services based on a blockchain platform that can cleanly handle multiple devices per user, and large, dynamic teams. In 2015, Keybase has raised a total of $10.8M in funding over 1 round.

The Co-founder and developer of Keybase, Max Krohn, will lead Zoom's security engineering team and will be reporting directly to Eric S. Yuan, CEO of Zoom.

Executive Opinion

Eric S. Yuan, CEO of Zoom, said, "There are end-to-end encrypted communications platforms. There are communications platforms with easily deployable security. There are enterprise-scale communications platforms. We believe that no current platform offers all of these. This is what Zoom plans to build, giving our users security, ease of use, and scale, all at once. The first step is getting the right team together. Keybase brings deep encryption and security expertise to Zoom, and we’re thrilled to welcome Max and his team. Bringing on a cohesive group of security engineers like this significantly advances our 90-day plan to enhance our security efforts."

Max Krohn, a Keybase.io co-founder, and developer, said, "Keybase is thrilled to join Team Zoom! Our team is passionate about security and privacy, and it is an honor to be able to bring our encryption expertise to a platform used by hundreds of millions of participants a day."

Zoom's Keybase acquisition

The acquisition will help Zoom to build an end to end encryption plan that can reach current scalability.

The keybase team will offer essential contributions to the company's 90-day plan to proactively identify, address, and enhance the security and privacy capabilities of its platform.

Just a few days back, Zoom also signed a deal with Oracle as its Cloud Infrastructure provider.
