IBM Transforms its Software to be Cloud-Native


IBM recently announced that its software portfolio is now cloud-native and tuned to run on the Red Hat Open Source OpenShift.

IBM is a global technology company that offers software, hardware, cognitive computing, and cloud-based services.

With this announcement, organizations can now easily build mission-critical applications once and run them on some of the major public clouds, which include the Google Cloud Platform, IBM Cloud, Alibaba, AWS, Microsoft Azure, and some others.

This new capability will be delivered as pre-integrated solutions called by the name as IBM Cloud Paks.

The IBM containerized and certified software will provide a common operating model and a common set of services. These services include the monitoring, security, logging, identity management and are merely designed to control and improve visibility across the cloud together with an intuitive and unified dashboard.

Arvind Krishna, senior vice president, Cloud and Cognitive Software of IBM said. "IBM is unleashing its software from the data center to fuel the enterprise workload race to the cloud. This will further position IBM the industry leader in the more than $1 trillion dollars hybrid cloud opportunity,". "We are providing the essential tools enterprises need to make their multi-year journey to cloud on common, open standards that can reach across clouds, across applications, and across vendors with Red Hat."

Jim Whitehurst, president, and CEO, Red Hat said, "Red Hat is unlocking innovation with Linux-based technologies, including containers and Kubernetes, which have become the fundamental building blocks of hybrid cloud environments,". "This open hybrid cloud foundation is what enables the vision of any app, anywhere, anytime. Combined with IBM's strong industry expertise and supported by a vast ecosystem of passionate developers and partners, customers can create modern apps with the technologies of their choice and the flexibility to deploy in the best environment for the app - whether that is on-premises or across multiple public clouds."

IBM Software service Announcements

Besides, IBM announced fully managed Red Hat OpenShift service on IBM cloud, on IBM Z and LinuxONE platforms.

The services and software, which includes more than 100 products from the IBM portfolio of software. All are optimized to run on Red Hat OpenShift.

These services and softwares will be delivered on IBM hybrid multi-cloud platform, built on some of the open-source platforms which include the Red Hat OpenShift, Red Hat Enterprise Linux. the announcement notes.

In October 2018, IBM announced the acquisition of Red Hat for $190.00 per share in cash leading to a total enterprise value of approximately $34 billion. In July 2019, IBM has closed the acquisition Red Hat. The deal has positioned IBM as number #1 hybrid cloud provider in a USD 1 trillion hybrid-cloud markets by 2020.
