DISH to leverage VMware Telco Cloud Platform for its 5G Network

DISH has selected VMware for its telco cloud platform to build US's first 5G, cloud-native Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN).

Open Radio Access Networks (OpenRAN) is an initiative to define and build 2G, 3G and 4G RAN solutions based on general-purpose vendor-neutral hardware and software-defined technology. The initiative helps in reducing the cost of building mobile networks.

Executive Opinion

Executive Vice President and Chief Network Officer, DISH, "VMware software will serve as a powerful foundation for our cloud-native, software-defined 5G network. By bringing together innovations such as the distributed cloud, edge computing and network slicing, this software will help us provide our customers with customizable, secure solutions that will be more cost-effective than legacy, vertically-integrated, hardware-reliant alternatives.""

Executive Vice President and General Manager, Telco and Edge Cloud Business Unit, VMware, "We’re excited to work with DISH to architect and build a state-of-the-art, nationwide cloud-first 5G mobile network platform. This software-led approach will enable DISH to innovate and deliver new services to all types of customers – enterprise, small business, and consumer – across the U.S."

DISH and VMware Telco Cloud platform

The VMware Telco Cloud will allow DISH to bring an abstraction layer across multiple network domains. DISH will also get to leverage hyper-scale public cloud capacity where needed while maintaining core control points, notes the announcement.

With VMware Telco Cloud, DISH said that it has already onboarded dozens of cloud-native 5G network functions from multiple software vendors. The platform is also allowing DISH to dynamically move and scale workloads within the cloud, based on consumer demand.

DISH will bring the first live 5G network in the U.S. market delivering secure, high-capacity, and low-latency services, notes the announcement.
