Coronavirus halts Autonomous Car Testing


Coronavirus outbreak has almost halted autonomous car testing at major Self-driving technology companies, including Waymo, Cruise and Uber, reports Reuters.

It should be noted that Self-driving technology demands backup driver during autonomous car testing.

Major Opinion

Reuters report noted that Alphabet unit Waymo is temporarily suspending robotaxi services in Phoenix that require a backup driver, but added that fully automated services would continue.

The same Reuters report refers to Waymo blog post, which said, "Removing the human driver holds great promise for not only making our roads safer, but for helping our riders stay healthy in these uncertain times."

Who else paused Autonomous Car Testing?

Other Self-driving technology players such as Toyota-backed Pony.ai,  Ford Motor's Argo have also paused Autonomous Car Testing efforts temporarily, notes the report.
