Google to Acquire Data Migration startup, Alooma, to Accelerate its Cloud Business

Google has announced that it is acquiring data migration firm, Alooma, to simplify cloud migration for its customers. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Alooma provides data pipeline as a service. It allows users of any data source like databases, applications, any API to import data and supports many of the most popular data sources. Alooma raised USD $15 million over three investment rounds from Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed, according to CrunchBase.

To be more agile and quick to drive business results, organizations around the world are trying to digitally transform themselves. One of the hurdles in achieving such transformations is migrating data that is stored on premises, in any cloud, or multiple clouds are a difficult process.

Executive opinion

In a blog post, Co-Founder/CEO, Yoni Broyde and Co-Founder/CTO, Yair Weinberger said, "This acquisition is the evolution of our long-standing partnership with Google Cloud. It follows several native integrations, over the years, from Google Ads and Analytics to Cloud Spanner and BigQuery. Joining Google Cloud will bring us one step closer to delivering a full self-service database migration experience bolstered by the power of their cloud technology, including analytics, security, AI, and machine learning."

In another blog post, Vice President, Engineering at Google, Amit Ganesh, said, "The addition of Alooma, subject to closing conditions, is a natural fit that allows us to offer customers a streamlined, automated migration experience to Google Cloud, and give them access to our full range of database services, from managed open source database offerings to solutions like Cloud Spanner and Cloud Bigtable. This simplified migration path also opens the door for customers to take advantage of all the technologies we have to offer, including analytics, security, AI and machine learning."

What's Next

Google will use Alooma's technology to help Google Cloud Platform (GCP) customers a streamlined, automated migration experience to Google Cloud. 

Also, the integration of Alooma's technology will further allow GCP / Google customers to take advantage of analytics, security, AI, machine learning and access Google's database offerings such as Cloud Spanner and Cloud Bigtable.
