Mirantis brings Converged Access Gateway, Magma Platform, to Mobile Operators around the World

Mirantis today announced that it has certified open-source converged access gateway software platform Magma with its Mirantis Cloud Platform Edge (MCP Edge).

Edge computing is critical in today IoT (internet of things) era. This paradigm introduces the capability to process data at the edge instead of transmitting data to the cloud for further processing. Edge infrastructure introduces distributed points of presence (PoPs) across geographies and architected for low latencies.

Tuned for edge computing infrastructure, Mirantis Cloud Platform Edge provides single centralized management across multiple edge deployments.

Developed by Facebook, Magma is an open-source software platform providing a software-centric distributed mobile packet core and tools for automating network management. Magma extends existing network topologies to the edge, private LTE networks or wireless enterprise deployments.

Executive Opinion

Co-founder and CMO, Mirantis, Boris Renski, said, "New entrants into the mobile operator space like Reliance Jio have been able to quickly capture huge market share by building networks at 20% the cost of traditional players and then passing these savings to the consumers. Network virtualization and open source building blocks are key to achieving these savings. Mirantis already helped some of the biggest operators virtualize their network infrastructure using open standards. Offering services and support for Magma will help us take this further and help mobile operators launch new edge and 5G services cost effectively."

Magma team lead at Facebook, Amar Padmanabhan, said, "In order to bring affordable internet access to underserved areas of the world, we work to empower telecom companies and vendors with carrier grade, open source software for building next generation mobile networks. Mirantis’ experience and capabilities in building open source-based carrier networks make them an excellent partner to collaborate with on this journey."

Magma and Mirantis Cloud Platform Edge

Mirantis worked for the last six months to integrate, test and certify Magma platform with Mirantis’ Kubernetes-based infrastructure edge offering, called MCP Edge, the announcement notes.

The certified combination of MCP Edge and Magma converged access gateway will:

  • Brings more automation, less downtime, better predictability, and more agility to add new services and applications, efficient management for the network for telecom operators
  • Enable federation between existing mobile network operators and new infrastructure providers for expanding rural infrastructure
  • Allow telecom operators to add capacity and reach by using Wi-Fi and CBRS when constrained with licensed spectrum
The announcement further noted that MCP Edge integrates OpenStack, Kubernetes, and Mirantis’ flexible infrastructure manager, DriveTrain. This integration enables operators to deploy a combination of container, VM and bare metal points of presence (POPs) connected by a unified management plane.
