IBM and Cloudera Announce their Strategic Partnership for advanced data and AI solutions

IBM and Cloudera announced their strategic partnership to bring advanced data and AI solutions to the expansive Apache Hadoop ecosystem.

In 2018, market leaders in Hadoop space, Cloudera and Hortonworks announced their USD $5.2 billion mergers. The merger created one of the big players in open source big data space.

Executive Opinion

Vice President of Global Channels and Alliances, Cloudera, Scott Andress said, "By teaming more strategically with IBM we can accelerate data-driven decision making for our joint enterprise customers who want a hybrid and multi-cloud data management solution with common security and governance. We are pleased to have expanded our relationship with IBM, and I am very encouraged by the momentum that our companies have continued to generate together since the merger."

History of the agreement

In early 2019, post-merger of Hortonworks and Cloudera, the then existing IBM partnership with Hortonworks was extended to the newly merged company.

This further led to the creation of integrated solutions for data science and management. The new agreement has been built in these already established integrated solutions and extends them to include the Cloudera platform, says the announcement.

However, the partnership has led to some new decisions for both the companies. IBM will resell the Cloudera Enterprise Data Hub and Cloudera DataFlow. On the part of Cloudera, it has planned to begin the reselling of IBM’s Watson Studio and BigSQL.

In March 2019, Cloudera also announced its new edge data management software solutions geared towards the Internet of Things (IoT) and Edge computing.
