The Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) and GlobalPlatform recently announced their new partnership. The purpose is to align the efforts of IIC and GlobalPlatform for interoperability, portability, security, and privacy of the industrial Internet.

The Industrial Internet Consortium is the world’s leading membership program transforming business and society by accelerating the Industrial Internet of Things.  GlobalPlatform is a non-profit industry association. GlobalPlatform’s specifications are highly regarded as the international standard for enabling secure digital services and devices.

Both will drive joint technical and tactical activities for security technologies and best practices specifically for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and related market segments. In addition, they will collaborate on Technical specifications, Best practices guides, Whitepapers, different Use cases, Workshops, Marketing activities, and promotion and Webinars

The IIC Liaison Working Group is the gateway for formal relationships with standards and open-source organizations, consortia, alliances, certification and testing bodies, and government entities/agencies, the announcement said.

A few days back Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) and the OpenFog Consortium (OpenFog) agreed to combine their forces of in a new international consortium in Industrial IoT, fog and edge computing. This will bring OpenFog members into the IIC organization.

Founded in November 2015, the OpenFog Consortium aimed to advance fog computing and address bandwidth, latency and communications challenges associated with the Internet of Things, 5G and Artificial Intelligence enabled applications.

The combined memberships will continue to drive the momentum of the Industrial Internet including the development and promotion of industry guidance and best practices for fog and edge computing.

Executive Opinion

Liaison Working Group Chair, Secretary of the IIC Steering Committee and Senior Director at Huawei, Wael William Diab, said, “We are delighted to work with GlobalPlatform and its members to enable secure services and devices in the Industrial IoT ecosystemTrustworthiness is essential to accelerating the industrial digitization and market adoption of IIoT. We look forward to the collaboration between our groups.”

OpenFog chairman and president, and director, AI and IoT business development, Microsoft, Matt Vasey, said, “We’re excited by the growth and advancement of fog technologies—from a technology, standards, and general awareness standpoint—since our launch nearly three years ago. During that time, it has increasingly become apparent that we share so much synergy with the efforts of the IIC that it just made sense to bring the two consortia together. The resulting combination of memberships, resources, and shared knowledge will only further the growth of the technologies, including fog, that will support IIoT ecosystems.”

These consortium consolidations and partnerships will help the industry in stopping the proliferation of different specifications for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and other digital services.
