As per the 2018 report by Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud Infrastructure as a Service, Worldwide, cloud infrastructure includes standardized, highly automated offering, where compute resources, complemented by storage and networking capabilities, offered to end user customer. Gartner clearly distinguished Cloud IaaS Vs Cloud infrastructure. Gartner has referred to Cloud IaaS in this report for their Magic Quadrant for Cloud Infrastructure as a Service, Worldwide.

The key observation is the entry of Google Cloud Platform into Leadership quadrant from visionary quadrant, just below leadership quadrant. Below is the snip from 2017 for the same report where only Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure were the key leadership players.

2017 Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure were key Players in Gartner Cloud Infrastructures magic quadrant

In 2017 report, Google Cloud Platform (GCP) was in the visionary quadrant and now Gartner has moved GCP to leadership quadrant. In addition, as compared to 2017 report, the latest report has dropped 8 niche players excluding Alibaba Cloud, IBM Bluemix, and Oracle cloud. This change is due to the scale Gartner used in evaluating space and considered only cloud vendors having hyperscale integrated IaaS and PaaS offerings, or that are currently developing those offerings. Below is the list of vendors participating and no longer participating in Gartner magic quadrant for Cloud Infrastructure as a Service.
  • Cloud Vendors continued - Alibaba Cloud, Amazon AWS, Google GCP, IBM Bluemix, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle cloud.
  • Vendors moved out of magic quadrant - CenturyLink, Fujitsu, Interoute (acquired by GTT in Feb), Joyent (owned by Samsung), Virtustream (owned by EMC), NTT Communications, RackSpace, and Skytap.

As a closing remark, the total number of cloud vendors listed in magic quadrant have reduced from 14 to just 6. Another observation in 2018 report is there are no more visionaries included in magic quadrant this year.
